白色結(jié)晶。易溶于熱乙醇、熱水和磷酸鈉水溶液,幾乎不溶于苯、二硫化碳和石油醚。1g溶于約250ml冷水、1000ml氯仿、400ml乙醚、60ml戊醇。半數(shù)致死量(大鼠,腹腔)1500mg/kg。

馬尿酸在馬及其它草食動(dòng)物的尿中含量很多,在人的尿中也含有少量。從食物攝入的苯甲酸輸送到肝臟,在ATP,Mg2+CoA的共同作用下,肽鍵和甘氨酸結(jié)合生成的化合物。這種合成在狗是于腎臟中進(jìn)行的,其它動(dòng)物是在肝臟中進(jìn)行的,從肝臟中提取出來(lái)的酶樣品在試管中也能進(jìn)行。分解馬尿酸的酶為馬尿酸酶(hippuricase)。
